My name is Lydia and I am finishing my PhD in linguistics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I am interested in the intersection between language and society in the contemporary globalized world. My dissertation is about how Uzbek women living in the United States use the languages they speak (e.g. Russian, Uzbek, English), different genres of speaking (e.g. storytelling, "fate talk"), and meta-commentary on the ways that other people speak in order to create and sustain certain identities for themselves.

I have also worked with other grad students to create materials that apply theories about language to the classroom context in the "Language and Diversity in K-12 Education Initiative". In the resources tab you can get access to these materials.
